¿Alguna vez se han preguntado de donde obtienen el nombre los huracanes?
Some time have you ever asked yourself where does hurricanes names come from?

El nombre Huracan se dice provenir de la lengua Taína y significa "El centro de los vientos", pero otras fuentes afirman que su origen es Maya, cuyo significado se cree es el nombre del Dios del fuego y las tormentas "hurakan", aunque probablemente tenga relación con Kukulkan, el Dios del viento.
The name of hurricane it says come from Taino and it means "the center of winds", but other sourcers affirm that it has mayan origin, whose meaning it believes is the name of the God of fire and storms "hurakan", even probably it has relationship with Kukulkan, the god of wind.

Durante la epoca colonial en América, se solía nombrar a estas tormentas con el nombre del santo del día en que golpeaba tierra. Aunque usualmente sólo escogian el nombre de mujeres por su temperamento.
During colonial time in America, it used to name these storms with the name of the Saint of the day in which stroke the eart. Even usually only were chosen women's name because of their temperament.

Durante el siglo XIX y principios y mediados del siglo XX, sólo se utilizaron nombres de mujeres. Hasta que en la decada de los 70's se incluyeron nombres de hombres, y se acordo tener una lista de nombres alfabeticos que se repetirian cada 6 años, y aquellos huracanes fatidicamente memorables serían retirados como en el 2005: Katrina, Rita, Stan, Emily y Wilma. Este último el huracán más poderoso en la historia del oceano Atlantico.

During XIX and part of XX century, only were used women's day. Until decade of 70's were included names of males, and it was agreed to have a list of alphabetic names which would repeat each 6 years, and those hurricanes lethaly famous would be retired like in 2005: Katrina, Rita, Stan, Emily and Wilma. The latter, the most powerful hurricane in the history of Atlantic ocean.
